Ottawa -Tulip Festival

Jan. 19, 2005 Ottawa Tulip Festival: The Rideau Canal plays host to many festivals. One of the most popular is the Tulip Festival, celebrated in May.

Fearing an invasion by Germany in World War II, Holland's Royal family fled to England. Once there Princess Juliana, who was pregnant, was sent to Canada for safety reasons. While in Ottawa she gave birth to a baby girl at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. In order for the little princess to be born a Dutch citizen the hospital room was temporarily changed to be part of Holland. Princess Juliana was very grateful for so much kindness shown to her and her daughter that Holland has been sending 100,000 tulip bulbs every year. These bulbs grow into beautiful tulips that line the Rideau Canal, Dow's and Commissioners lakes, as well as Rideau Hall and Parliament Hill. In all, the flowers make about 15km of tulip beds, making it the largest Tulip Festival in the world.

Some of the events during this celebration include concerts, fireworks displays, crafts, marathons and the Flotilla (decorated boats parade along the canal). The well-known Tulip Café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner among the flowers, and the cooks use tulips in many of the dishes.

This year the Tulip Festival runs from May 5-23, 2005.
